Dr. McDowell grew up near Fredericksburg in Dale City, Virginia. He became familiar with our town while hiking and camping with the Boy Scouts when Fredericksburg was much more rural farmland than the vibrant growth community it is today. Since he was a boy, Dr. McDowell wanted to be a physician. His family doctor became a mentor through high school and college and taught Dr. McDowell valuable lessons about personal relationships with patients and planted a love for primary care.
After graduating from Gar-Field High, Dr. McDowell enrolled at Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia. In addition to earning a bachelors degree in Biology, Dr. McDowell learned valuable leadership skills and was a sought after member of many college boards and organizations. He graduated in 1996 not only Magna cum Laude, but also with the special designation of “Longwood Honors” celebrating his excellent academic achievements. He then continued his studies as a medical student at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM).
WVSOM has gained notoriety as one of U.S. News and World Report’s top twenty medical schools for primary care. Dr. McDowell’s training carried him to both poor rural areas of Appalachia, as well as the famous Cleveland Clinic — affording him a diverse medical training. When Dr. McDowell graduated from medical school in 2000 he had already achieved a leadership award from the American Medical Association.
Specialty training took Dr. McDowell to Baltimore, Maryland for his residency in internal medicine. He completed his post doctoral training in June 2003, but not before his academic, leadership, and administrative skills earned him the prestigious appointment as Chief Medical Resident. Dr. McDowell continued on as a staff hospitalist (specializing only in hospital patients) and adjunct faculty instructor of Medicine at Franklin Square Hospital Center for the residents and University of Maryland medical students.
Dr. McDowell transitioned from his employed staff position in Baltimore for his first love—private practice. In 2004, combining his excellent clinical and leadership skills, Dr. McDowell founded Colonial Internal Medicine Associates (CIMA). Much of the practice’s culture, phenomenal growth, and reputation are attributed to his vision and leadership. Becoming a physician for the right reasons and the pride and responsibility he takes in his role as a patient’s personal physician are evident in his care and development of his practice.
Dr. and Mrs. McDowell live with their three wonderful children in Fredericksburg and are very active in supporting our local community through sports, St. Mary Catholic Church, the Fredericksburg Area Service League, and numerous local adult and child charities.
